Van Loon spent thirty-three months of service in the war, which he often referred to as “man’s inhumanity to man,” (Van Loon 10). In September of 1946 he went back to River Falls to continue his college training in Agriculture Education. He got a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Science from the University of Wisconsin River Falls and a master’s degree in Extension Education from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He was the Waushara County Agricultural Agent for thirty years and owned his own business. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood working, photography, and volunteer projects. On March 27, 1948, he married Mary Jean Amberg in New Amsterdam, Wisconsin. They were married for almost sixty years. They had four children (Lesla, John, Alan, and Linda), six grandchildren (Jennifer, Jake, Colin, Ryan, Kurt, and Bret), and seven great-grandchildren (Rachel, Hannah, Bailey, Brighton, Nora, Nolan, and Ava). He recently passed away on March 19, 2017 at age ninety-two. His funeral was held at World War II Memorial Building in Wautoma, Wisconsin.
